Philodendrons are tropical stunners that bring jungle vibes to your home. With their gorgeous, glossy leaves and easy-going nature, they've become total plant-community favorites. Whether you're into climbing plants or statement pieces, there's a philodendron for every style!
Philodendrons come in three main growth habits, each with its own unique characteristics:
Climbers
These philodendrons climb upward
Need support like moss poles or trellises
Examples: Philodendron verrucosum (with its velvety leaves), Philodendron El Choco Red (stunning red backs), Philodendron fuzzy petiole (unique fuzzy stems)
Creepers/Crawlers
Grow horizontally along the ground or surface
Develop shorter internodes
Examples: Philodendron gloriosum (velvet heart-shaped leaves with dramatic veining), Philodendron mamei (quilted silver patterns), Philodendron pastazanum (massive rounded leaves)
Self-Headers
Grow upright without need for support
Form a central stem or trunk
Examples: Philodendron billietiae (dramatic elongated leaves), Philodendron birkin (dark green leaves with white pinstripes), Philodendron congo (glossy, deep green leaves)

Light 🌤️
Bright indirect light is crucial
Morning sun can be tolerated
Protect from harsh afternoon rays
Lower light = slower growth and less vibrant patterns
Water & Substrate 💧
Well-aerated, chunky soil mix
Add orchid bark, perlite, and charcoal
Water when top 1-2 inches feel dry
Use filtered or rainwater if possible
Soil Mix Recipe:
40% quality potting soil / coco coir
30% orchid bark
20% perlite
10% charcoal
a pinch of worm castings
you can always add some leca, zeolite, pumice, lava rocks, fine sand or moss.
Humidity & Air Flow 💨
Most rare philodendrons need 60-80% humidity
Use humidifiers
Good air circulation prevents fungal issues
When you water your plant correctly, you don't have to worry as much about humidity
Temperature:
Keep between 65-85°F (18-29°C)
Protect from cold drafts
Most species hate temperatures below 60°F
Support & Training:
Climbers: Use moss poles or bark boards
Creepers: Provide horizontal space or shallow trays
Self-headers: Stakes for support as they mature
Propagation Success:
Best time: Spring to early summer
Use node cuttings with aerial roots
Keep warm and humid during rooting
Sphagnum moss method works great
Preventive Care:
Regular inspections for spider mites (they love philodendrons!)
Maintain air flow to prevent fungal issues
Clean leaves monthly with diluted neem oil
Growth Issues:
Small leaves = insufficient humidity or light
Loss of variegation = too little light
Crispy edges = low humidity or water stress
New leaves unfurl regularly
Bright, clean foliage
Strong root system
Steady growth in season
