3 Types of Philodendron Growth Patterns

Philodendrons come in three main growth habits, each with its own unique characteristics:

Climbers

  • These philodendrons climb upward

  • Need support like moss poles or trellises

  • Examples: Philodendron verrucosum (with its velvety leaves), Philodendron El Choco Red (stunning red backs), Philodendron fuzzy petiole (unique fuzzy stems)

Creepers/Crawlers

  • Grow horizontally along the ground or surface

  • Develop shorter internodes

  • Examples: Philodendron gloriosum (velvet heart-shaped leaves with dramatic veining), Philodendron mamei (quilted silver patterns), Philodendron pastazanum (massive rounded leaves)

Self-Headers

  • Grow upright without need for support

  • Form a central stem or trunk

  • Examples: Philodendron billietiae (dramatic elongated leaves), Philodendron birkin (dark green leaves with white pinstripes), Philodendron congo (glossy, deep green leaves)
